Statement on Anti-Transgender Policy Proposals

The School of Social Welfare and the DEI Council explicitly condemn anti-trans rhetoric and policy proposals that threaten transgender and non-binary individuals and communities across the state of Kansas and beyond. We recognize that hatred and serious misconceptions about the experiences of sexually and gender diverse populations are feeding the over 300 pieces of legislation in the U.S today that take direct aim at trans communities. Our social work values compel us to oppose any efforts that would stop families from accessing essential health care, prevent transgender youth from participating equitably in school and community activities, and prohibit gender-specific services for transgender women like shelters for victims of domestic violence and those experiencing houselessness. Many of these services particularly impact marginalized families and those who have few resources.

According to the National Association of Social Workers, “social workers have the responsibility to engage in advocacy to ensure that the human rights of LGBTQIA2S+ people be protected from any and all efforts to limit full participation in civic life and related activities that effectively enhance social, physical, and mental health well-being.” The School of Social Welfare commits to continued work to safeguard the rights of transgender and LGBTQIA2S+ communities through advocacy, education, and research. We are proud of the substantial contributions our scholars’ findings have made to the evidence of the harmful effects of anti-trans policies on community well-being. We will continue to disseminate this scholarship for public information and greater impact.

We urge you to take time to care for yourselves and your families during this time of attacks on our youth and families.
