About the Ph.D. in Social Work at KU

The Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work program at the KU School of Social Welfare prepares students to become leaders in advancing social work practice and policy through teaching, research and scholarship.

  • 4-5 years average to complete
  • In-person classes on the KU Lawrence campus
  • 1:1 faculty mentoring
  • KU is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), a group of the nation's top research schools
  • Funding: four years tuition support; students apply for competitive GRA/GTA positions
  • Curriculum includes: required coursework, electives, an integrative paper, a comprehensive exam process, and a research dissertation

Ph.D. Admissions and Application

Admission to the KU Ph.D. in Social Work program requires:

  • Master's degree in social work or a related field (MSW preferred)
  • Graduate school GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Preferred two years of social work or related practice 

The Ph.D. admissions application for fall 2027 will open in October 2026.
