Professional Writing Consultant

Who is the School of Social Welfare Professional Writing Consultant?

Joe Bush is the Social Welfare Professional Writing Consultant. He started in March 2022 with over three years of experience as a writing consultant for academic writing across multiple institutions. He earned a Master of Arts in Rhetoric & Writing Studies from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Arts in English & French from KU.

My focus when conducting writing consultant sessions is on the growth and improvement of the student writer with whom I am working. I believe that the goal of a writing consultant session is for a student to feel more confident and comfortable as a writer, and that my role is to help a student writer recognize their own strengths and work on improving what challenges their writing may present them. This is more than simply proofreading or copy-editing. My goal is for a writer to leave a writing tutorial session with me not only with an improved piece of writing, but as a stronger and more confident writer as well.

I think of writing like any other skill that a person gains and develops, one which can be improved through practice – much like playing a sport or a musical instrument, any writer at any level in their personal development can benefit from writing consultant sessions. I will work with any student in the School of Social Welfare on any type of writing, at any step in the writing process, from brainstorming and prewriting to a final read-through.

I can work with you on all types of writing:

  • Research Papers
  • Reflection Papers
  • Discussion Board Responses
  • Annotated Bibliographies
  • Resumes, Cover Letters, Statements of Purpose

I can work with you at all points in the writing process:

  • Preliminary Research
  • Understanding assignment guidelines
  • Researching Sources
  • Drafting Papers
  • Proofreading Drafts
  • APA Formatting and References
