About the Master of Social Work at KU

KU's MSW program equips graduates with the knowledge for an advanced social work career.

  • Program options:
    • Advanced Standing MSW (for students with a BSW degree)
    • Traditional MSW (for students with another bachelor's degree)
  • Program locations:
    • Lawrence, Kansas
    • Overland Park, Kansas (KU Edwards Campus)
    • Salina, Kansas
    • Online
  • Concentrations:
    • Clinical social work practice (counseling and direct services for individuals, families, or groups)
    • Macro social work practice (policy practice, administration, advocacy)
  • Complete practicum placement to gain real-world experience

MSW Admissions and Application

The MSW admissions application for summer and fall 2027 opens on Oct. 1, 2026.

Advanced Standing MSW Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited social work program
  • GPA of 3.0 or above is preferred
  • All Advanced Standing applicants admitted to the program will begin courses in the summer term.

Traditional MSW Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university
  • GPA of 3.0 or above is preferred
  • Traditional MSW applicants admitted to the Lawrence, Edwards, or Online campuses may begin courses in summer or fall.
  • Traditional MSW applicants admitted to the Salina campus will begin courses in the fall.
