Event to connect the issue of MMIWG2ST+ to social work values of service

We invite social workers to learn about justice and dignity for MMIWG2ST+: Bringing Awareness to the Field in Practice and Policy on Tuesday, April 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. This event is online, free with registration and worth 1.5 CEU credit. 

MMIWG2ST+ is an inclusive acronym describing missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and gender-diverse relatives. Join us in learning about these tragic injustices and their roots in the violence of colonialism and anti-Indigenous U.S. policy — and in committing ourselves to solidarity and justice with Indigenous communities. 

Jodi Voice Yellowfish, who will speak during the event, is Cherokee, Muscogee Creek and Oglala Lakota. She was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, and is a product of the Relocation Program. She is also co-chair of the Dallas TRHT Board and is a commissioner for the Arts & Culture Advisory Board for the City of Dallas, but her passion and heart work is as one of the founders and chair for MMIWG2ST+ Texas Rematriate.

Event details: 

  • Participants will be able to connect MMIWG2ST+ to social work values of service, social and environmental justice, and the dignity and worth of the person.   

  • Participants will be able to connect the current issue of MMIWG2ST+ to its historical context, including colonialism, federal policies such as the American Indian Relocation Act, and the state of U.S./tribal relationships.   

  • Participants will be able to identify at least two ways they can engage in activism and solidarity with tribes and Indigenous communities, within their own practice and their own daily lives.
