Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Working Group

Developed in 2017, nominated School of Social Welfare faculty and staff will propose action steps the School can take to further promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

University of Kansas Office of Diversity and Equity

The Office of Diversity & Equity leads and facilitates the development of institutional policies and protocols intended to create a more representative, equitable, and inclusive KU; where greater fairness, care, and belonging are better integrated into our learning and workplace practices; and all have opportunities to meet their academic and professional goals.

Scholarship Opportunities

The KU School of Social Welfare is excited to announce the expansion of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Scholars Program.

DEI Fellow for Racial Justice

One MSW student will be selected as a DEI Fellow for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Fellow will receive a $6,000 scholarship ($3,000 each semester) via their student account and a $1,000 research support budget.

The Fellow is expected to:

  • Conduct a small research study on a topic related to racial justice with support from the Coordinator for DEI;
  • Present preliminary findings from the study during the Spring, 2020 semester;
  • Supervise and assist the BSW DEI Scholars (See below) each semester; and
  • Share a poster about their experience as a DEI Fellow at the DEI End-of-Year Celebration (April/May, 2020).

Eligible students:

  • Any student who will be an MSW student on any KU campus during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Application process:

Interested MSW students should submit their application online here no later than June 14. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by July 1. The application form must include an essay addressing the following questions:

  • What does it mean to you to be a DEI Fellow for Racial Justice?
  • What racial justice topic do you plan to study and why is it important to you?
  • What would you like to learn through the course of your research study?

The essay should be 1,000 words or less.

DEI Scholars

Two BSW students will be selected as DEI Scholars for the 2019-2020 academic year. Each Scholar will participate for one semester. Students will indicate their semester preference on the application. The Scholars will receive a $1,500 scholarship via their student account during the semester in which they are appointed.

Eligible students:

  • Any student who will be a BSW student on any KU campus during the 2019-2020 academic year.

The Scholar is expected to:

  • Identify an area of DEI and present on it to their colleagues, staff, faculty, and the community; and
  • Share a poster about their presentation at the DEI End-of-Year Celebration (April/May, 2020).  

Application process:
Interested BSW students should submit their application online here no later than July 15. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by August 1. The application form must include an essay addressing the following questions:

  • What does it mean to you to be a DEI Scholar?
  • What topic pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion do you plan to present about and why is it important to you?
  • What would you like to learn through the course of your project?

The essay should be 500 words or less.
