Biography —
Lena Dow (Woods) is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). She holds a Bachelor of Social Work and a Master of Social Work from the University of Kansas.
Woods currently works as a special services social worker for a school district in northeast Kansas. In that role, she provides social work services as indicated on students' IEPs and includes small group and individual sessions with kids, helping them learn the skills necessary to manage themselves and their emotions, build social skills, and lessen feelings of depression/anxiety.
Before focusing on school social work, Woods worked as a supervisor of aftercare services in the child welfare system. She also provided in-home therapy to families experiencing the foster care system and conducted home studies for adoptions. Additionally, she has worked as a therapist-case manager in an acute, inpatient, adult psychiatric facility.
Research —
Practice and Research Focus Areas
Woods's practice experience is focused on serving children and families. Her research focus as a doctoral student is on whole-family health care practices, and the education or preparation of allied-health professionals entering work in the hospital setting. Furthermore, she is interested in effective, evidence-based care provided in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to parents of premature infants.
