Practice and Research Focus Areas

High's practice focus has been "angry and institutionalized men," a group he has specialized in after working as a therapist in a maximum security prison.

High's doctoral work is focused on reentry programming for individuals who experience mental illness and/or substance use disorders, and are returning to the community from city and county jails, and how to mitigate risk in these individuals so that they can remain in the community and avoid returning to jail.

DSW Capstone Project

Capstone project title: Advancing Smart Decarceration: Social Work Intervention and Recidivism Among Individuals with Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders

Capstone project description: This capstone project seeks to develop reentry programming that supports individuals who experience mental illness, substance use disorders, or both, and are returning to the community from city and county jails, which reduces these individuals' risks of returning to jail. It uses the Risk-Need-Responsivity Model as a framework for assessing risks and identifying needs in these individuals. It implements programming responsive to these needs and the unique characteristics of each reentering individual. This project seeks to advance Smart Decarceration, one of the Grand Challenges for Social Work.
