Fall DSW Spotlight Series will highlight experiences from Capstone Projects
Graduates of the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare will share insights from DSW Capstone Projects this fall in the DSW Spotlight Series, starting Thursday, Sept. 10.
The four-part online event series features leaders and alumni from the online KU DSW program. These practitioner-scholars will share experiences from developing their DSW Capstone Projects in crucial practice areas including healthcare, child and family services, and mental and behavioral health.
Presenters will discuss problems many social workers confront in their practice and share the lessons they learned in developing solutions.
The goal of the series are to engage the larger profession in considering these challenges and to help practitioners incorporate into their own agencies and practice contexts the substantial contributions of the DSW degree, which bridges research and practice, adding crucial expertise to shape the profession’s approach of our shared challenges.
At KU, macro-focused DSW students build a framework of leadership best practices, develop a deep understanding of research implementation, and apply critical learning theories from the social work classroom.
All events are hosted online. Attendance is free, and registration is required. Social workers and other behavioral health providers can receive continuing education credits by attending these events.

Thursday, Sept. 10 - The Scholarly Practitioner and the Future of Social Work
In this panel discussion, leaders of the KU School of Social Welfare will introduce participants to the online Doctor of Social Work degree and provide examples of how DSWs are shaping social work organizations, advancing practice, and contributing to the profession’s collective efforts to solve problems and improve community well-being.

Tuesday, Sept. 15 - Community Engagement for Health Service Access
Drs. Rebecca Beeler and DeMarreo Tidwell will share insights from projects to design and implement social work interventions to increase community access to needed health services. Beeler will present a guide to increase health literacy among Medicare beneficiaries. Tidwell will discuss a community engagement toolkit for overcoming barriers for Black individuals and families needing mental health services.

Friday, Sept. 25 - Mental Health & Intellectual Disability: Coming Together for Inclusive and Effective Social Work Practice
Dr. Jennifer Hoskins brings practice expertise, lived wisdom and the achievements of her DSW capstone project to support social workers’ efforts to build their competence for effective and ethical practice with individuals with intellectual disability, including those with mental illness.

Wednesday, Oct. 21 - Grand Challenges - Ensure Healthy Development for Youth: DSW Innovations to Reform Systems
Three KU DSW scholars share their work related to one of the Grand Challenges for Social Work - Ensure Healthy Development for Youth. Drs. Sharilyn Ray, Jessica Brown and Rachel Jeter will talk about that Grand Challenge, their DSW Capstone projects' contributions to it, and what they see as the barriers to the system reforms required to meet this Grand Challenge.
