Biography —
Meredith Bagwell-Gray, MSW, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas. She earned a PhD in Social Work from Arizona State University (ASU) in 2016, and in 2017 she completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the ASU Office of Gender Based Violence. With an emphasis on health equity research, Dr. Bagwell-Gray studies the intersections of race, gender, and age with environmental factors, like living in rural areas, and contextual factors, like experiencing intimate partner violence, on women’s health and safety. Her current research involves designing and testing a trauma-informed approach to promote sexual health and prevent cervical cancer among survivors of intimate partner violence, a project currently supported by an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant through the University of Kansas Medical Center. Her work includes understanding, preventing and intervening to address sexual violence in intimate relationships. Dr. Bagwell-Gray received a Master of Science in Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin in 2009, and her research is informed by direct practice social work experiences as an advocate and therapist with survivors of partner violence.

- Bagwell-Gray, M. E. Cervical Cancer Prevention among Survivors of Partner Violence: Technological Innovations for a Trauma-Informed Approach. $20,000, Submitted February 21, 2020 (July 2020 - July 2022). Women who experience partner violence are more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to women without such victimization history. In this community-engaged research project, I am collaborating with relevant stakeholders to develop and test web-based intervention modules to increase cervical health literacy among survivors of partner violence. Then, using a pre-experimental pretest posttest design, I will assess the impact of the modules among survivors of partner violence (N=40). This proposal reflects a continuation of my current research funded by the American Cancer Society (ACS) in which I am piloting a face-to-face, psychosocial behavioral health intervention to improve the cervical health of survivors of partner violence in Kansas and Greater Kansas City. Preliminary results indicate high acceptability of intervention activities and positive trends for women’s cervical health; yet, trends also indicate a need to expand the reach of the intervention to younger women and women in rural areas. The development of web-based intervention modules responds to this need.
