Biography

Michelle Mohr Carney, Ph.D., MSSA, is Dean and Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the University of Kansas and a nationally recognized scholar on intimate partner violence. She is an experienced academic leader who has led schools of social work within large public research universities for more than a decade, overseeing complex, multi-campus academic enterprises spanning education, research, and community engagement.

Her leadership is grounded in aligning people, systems, and strategy to advance student success, strengthen research impact, and expand access to high-quality professional education. She has successfully led accreditation processes, developed public-private partnerships, and supported the growth of externally funded research at the local, state, and federal levels, while strengthening universities’ roles as drivers of community impact.

Prior to joining the University of Kansas, Dr. Carney served as Director of the School of Social Work at Arizona State University, where she led a school of more than 2,000 students across four campuses and online programs, supported multiple research centers, and expanded access to high-quality professional education.

Her research focuses on improving family and community functioning by addressing intimate partner violence, with particular attention to how research can inform practice, policy, and system-level change. Her work emphasizes researcher–agency partnerships and has informed program development, judicial sentencing protocols, and treatment models across the United States and internationally, while also engaging students directly in the research process.

Dr. Carney’s scholarship challenges simplified narratives of violence and advances a more integrated approach to addressing complex forms of harm—one that aligns the ways problems are defined, interventions are designed, and systems are structured. Throughout her leadership and research, she focuses on strengthening institutions, so they are not only effective but also responsive to the people and communities they are intended to serve.
