Adjunct Faculty Member honored at Council on Social Work Education for published article
School of Social Welfare adjunct faculty member Dr. Amittia Parker was recently honored at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in Kansas City for her article, “Black Social Workers Matter: Using Parallel Narratives to Discuss Social Work History.”
Dr. Parker’s article, which was published in Volume 59 of the Journal of Social Work Education (JSWE), was chosen as the JSWE Best Conceptual Article of Volume 59.
Along with her fellow JSWE Best Article Awardees, Dr. Parker was honored at the CSWE 2024 Annual Program Meeting in Kansas City in October.
“I actually started writing this paper in my first class in the KU doctoral history and philosophy class taught in 2016 at the time by Dr. Margaret Severson,” Dr. Parker said. “Her feedback and encouragement as well as the support of my mentor Dr. Nancy Jo Kepple to continue refining my good ideas was critical in my process to publish this piece.”
Dr. Parker is an assistant professor at Georgetown University at the Thrive Center for Children, Families, and Communities. She also teaches in the Master of Social Work program at KU, with courses including Applied Research in Multi-Level Social Work, and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Social Work. Dr. Parker earned her PhD in social work from KU in 2021 and is a member of the KU School of Social Welfare Alumni Advisory Board.
