It is with great sadness that I am writing to announce that Dr. Toni Johnson died last week. She was in a hospital in Austin, Texas, surrounded by her family and loved ones. Toni was an Associate Professor with tenure at the KU School of Social Welfare. She was a beloved member of the School community from 2005 until her passing last week. Before joining the KU faculty, she received her doctorate in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin and had a successful practice career as a therapist, trainer, and program coordinator for disadvantaged individuals and families. Toni was a stalwart advocate for social justice. Her research centered on vulnerable populations, such as offenders, families of offenders, and children of prisoners. She sought to design and evaluate programs, such as child asset accounts, meant to help disadvantaged families move out of poverty. Toni won multiple teaching awards during her tenure. She was a kind, caring, and enthusiastic colleague and friend. The Social Welfare community mourns her loss and will miss her. Our hearts go out to her family during this difficult transition.
