School of Social Welfare Recent Actions to Promote Inclusion and Social Justice

  1. Formed new Toni Johnson Office on Race and Social Justice
    1. Appointed Dr. Willie Elliott Director of TJORSJ
    2. Office is guided by a representative committee of faculty, staff, and students
    3. The Office is currently advertising to hire a GRA
    4. The Office is sponsoring scholarships for students of color to increase support for minority students entering SSW programs in Fall 2016
    5. The Office brought in a national scholar on race to speak to the entire KU community.  Dean Larry Davis’s talk was attended by 165 people.
    6. The Office created three new Task Forces that are currently working on different aspects of race and social justice
  1. Student Support Task Force for Diversity and Inclusion
    1. The purpose of the Student Support Task Force for Diversity and Inclusion is to establish and foster minority student supportive services and resources that will promote inclusivity, valuing of diversity, academic excellence, social engagement, personal development, leadership skills, and an equitable school climate.
  1. Task Force for Identifying Mental Health Resources
    1. TJORSJ is also initiating a task force to explore the resources currently available at the University of Kansas for students with mental illnesses.
  1. Social Justice Research Task Force 
    1. The purpose is to bring together and heighten awareness of social justice research at SSW and work towards creating new projects. Seed grants from SSW endowment funds are available for new projects.
  1. SSW faculty participated in micro-aggression training in January 2016
  1. As requested in Fall 2015, many faculty, including the Dean, have posted office hours
  1. As requested in Fall 2015, an organizational chart was delivered to students so they could understand the offices and hierarchy in the School.
