Amy Hammer, KU School of Social Welfare 2003 M.S.W. graduate, has been named the 2015 recipient of Prairie View’s Justina D. Neufeld Scholarship. Hammer, a licensed social worker and certified sex therapist, works at Prairie View’s Newton office.
The scholarship of $500 will support Hammer’s attendance at the 47th American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists annual conference.
“One of my professional goals is to refine my skills working with couples who may have relational or marital problems,” Hammer explains. “I want to advance my skills as a therapist and a certified sex therapist to help couples navigate the complex issues that can arise at times in marriages.”
Since 2011, Prairie View has honored 10 employees through the Justina D. Neufeld Scholarship.
Neufeld worked at Prairie View for 40 years. As Prairie View’s first community nurse, she conducted home visits for patients discharged from the state hospital. She was also Prairie View’s first ambassador to Paraguay in 1969 and then returned to the community nurse position in addition to coordinating services to older adults and Family Life Services. Neufeld later served as director of the day hospital, interim director of child/adolescent services, special projects coordinator, interim nurse executive and interim director of Prairie View’s residential program.
“It’s a privilege to award this scholarship,” says Jessie Kaye, Prairie View’s president and CEO. “Throughout our history, Prairie View has been blessed with dedicated professionals, like Justina Neufeld. This scholarship is an investment in the future and in the innovative professionals, like Amy Hammer, who share their talents with us today.”
