Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W. Degree)

Admission Requirements

First-year students enter KU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or a liberal arts program at another institution and complete two semesters before applying.

  • Complete 36 hours of course work, including college algebra and English composition I and II
  • Earn a grade-point average of 2.5 or above. Transfer credit is not awarded for grades of D+ or below, however, the grade is figured into the G.P.A.
  • Submit B.S.W. application form, including:
    • Three essay questions
      • Knowledge about social work: What do social workers do? What are your reasons for applying to the B.S.W. program? How did you learn about Social Work as a career?
      • Commitment to Social Work: There are many majors at KU that are considered helping professions. What are your reasons for choosing to apply to the Social Work major over any of the other majors (do not just say that you “want to work with people”)? Explain who you might want to work with and why.
      • Future plans: How do you intend to use your social work knowledge/skills/abilities after graduating from the B.S.W. program? Discuss the job you see yourself doing when you complete the B.S.W.
    • Resume
    • Three reference forms
  • Online KU application (for transfer students)

Deadlines

  • February 1 for current KU students. Transfer students my submit their application by the February 1 deadline for early consideration.
  • June 15 for transfer students

Students are admitted for fall semester only. At the point of application all Social Welfare students must agree to the:

  • Current KU Students
    • Submit the B.S.W. online application. (NOTE: Once you click on the B.S.W. online application link and log in, you have officially started an application to the B.S.W. program.)
  • Transfer Students
    • Submit an application to KU through the Office of Admissions, indicating Social Welfare as your intended major.
    • After admission to KU is received, submit the B.S.W. online application. (NOTE: Once you click on the B.S.W. online application link and log in, you have officially started an application to the B.S.W. program.)
  • International Transfer Students
